Church Point Masterplan

1998 - current

"Church Point has been recognised as a special place for two hundred years, known for its beauty, heritage and as a gateway to Pittwater, nearby Scotland Island and bays of the Western Foreshores.  Church Point Friends want to keep it special, while finding appropriate solutions to current problems...............................................

Church Point Friends has been formed by a group of long-standing offshore and onshore residents with years of involvement in Church Point negotiations.

We aim:

   - to preserve the natural beauty and built heritage of Church Point
   - to prevent overdevelopment
   - to address the problems of parking through low-key, carefully designed infrastructure and managing demand for parking
   -  to foster friendly relations between all who use and live near Church Point by bringing offshore and onshore residents together
   - to contribute expertise and shared user experience to the planning and management of Church Point.
Until now, there has not been a group to bring together likeminded residents from both sides of the water in a co-operative spirit, to focus on our shared interests, values and vision for this beautiful area where we have all chosen to live. We support the important ongoing role of the local resident associations and seek to complement their work through a collaborative effort of design professionals and concerned residents. The Church Point Friends committee includes office-bearers and members of local residents associations, five architects and an engineer.

Church Point Friends support the objectives of the Church Point Plan of Management, but became very concerned at the lack of detailed reports, design development, a transparent process and inclusive community consultation. We oppose the two-level car park as a high impact, high cost, divisive overdevelopment which may not even solve the core problem of enabling offshore residents to access their homes. Management of the demand for parking is not addressed in the Plan of Management or current plans e.g. ways to manage the separate but competing needs of residents, commercial premises and visitors.  We have been raising all these issues with Council and seeking to work constructively to ensure the best outcome."

In 2016 the Northern Beaches Council established the Church Point Aesthetics Advisory Group made up of suitably qualified community representatives, Council staff and representatives of the contractor to work collaboratively to guide the final outcome of works in progress. Church Point Friend's focus remains on protecting and enhancing the public domain within a unique waterfront context.
